The 2018 line-up (in no particular order) . . .
The Young Rebel Goombas
The Young Rebel Goombas have been a Duval Street favorite for for years. The Long Island-based band founded and fronted by Emmy-winning composer cousins Goomba Richie Saccente and Goomba Cosmo Mallardi has found a second home in the Southernmost Key, where they’ve been featured at MOTM and Margaritaville, including the MOTM Street Festival. Their 2014 EP “Go Key West” is a reggae/trop rock masterpiece. Their sound draws on influences from such iconic acts as Bob Marley, Chicago, The Eagles, Jimmy Buffett and The Allman Brothers. The Goombas were a smash hit as the opening night headliner at the 2016 Laid Back Attack in their first ever West Coast appearance, and their stock is rising!
James “Sunny Jim” White
Mark Mulligan is returning for what LBA historians believe is his record-tying fifth Laid Back Attack!. His latest CD is “Same Beer Different Can” is the 14th CD recorded by this talented singer/songwriter. He grew up in the Phoenix area but eventually ended up south of the border, singing and writing songs for a living, raising his kids in a place he loves, spending time on the beach instead of in traffic, singing for people who dance to his tunes one night and the next day join him for charitable work with the “Castaway Kids,” a charity that was founded by Mark in 2006. He’s also the author of the book “The Three Miracles.” Mark will be performing as one of the Three Amigos at the Laid Back Attack finale.
The Detentions are Dan Sullivan and Chris Hillier, a couple of public school teachers who’ve taught themselves to chase their dreams and make the most of those summers off! The duo backed in to the trop rock world when their song “Coast” was discovered by Radio Margaritaville, and so even though they didn’t go looking for a trop rock audience, we sure enough found them! They were an overnight sensation, winning Trop Rock Duo of the Year awards in each of the last two TRMAs. Making their first musical trip to the Northwest, they are taking a break from live performances for most of the summer of 2018 to complete work on their next album. We are fortunate they decided to make an exception for Laid Back Attack’s Last Call!
Emily Randle is the only performer on the bill who is an active duty member of the US military! She made her mark at LBA XV, standing by all weekend long and sitting in with several of the performers with an energy and joyfulness that many attendees counted as a highlight of the event . She recently recorded her own solo CD “Girl of My Dreams” and has done shows with such notable singer-songwriters as Peter Mayer, John Frinzi, Scott Kirby and others.
Donny Brewer with The Dock Rockers
The 2017 Trop Rock Music Awards confirmed Donny Brewer as the genre’s brightest burning star! Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year! With a total of nine TRMAs in the last two years, the Brewers will have to build an addition to the Winnebago to house his trophies. After a memorable debut in 2017, Donny returns with his amazing band The Dock Rockers! Donny himself will be around all weekend sitting in with other artists, and then he and the band will close out LBA’s Last Call on the Saturday night July 14 grande finale show in the main ballroom.
Veteran singer-songwriter from Alabama Eric Erdman has been growing the buzz at Meeting of the Minds over the last few years, and now makes his way to the Pacific Northwest for a debut performance at Laid Back Attack. Those who’ve seen him at songwriter showcases in Key West know that the Northwest is in for something special – a clever songwriter, a highly skilled and creative guitarist and a charismatic if understated performer. Even in a lineup of powerhouse headliners, Eric Erdman, we predict, is a new name you’ll remember from Laid Back Attack’s Last Call.
Charlie Imes gained his trop rock credentials on the beaches of San Diego. After a successful battle against a life threatening cancer, Charlie re-assessed and left the worlds of business and politics, abandoning the rat race in favor of life as a touring musician. He’s since become a staple in the trop rock lover’s diet, as both a songwriter and song interpreter. His latest CD is “Gypsy Soul.”
His latest album “Life Looks Best,” produced by hit songwriter and Laid Back Attack alum Aaron Scherz, has been getting acclaim and airplay over the continent. His song “The Call” was written for the firefighters he worked with as a first responder, a career that was interrupted by a cancer diagnosis. A regular performer in the Keys and the Caribbean, Cory Young makes his first trek to the Northwest as part of his summer tour and his first ever appearance at Laid Back Attack XVI: Last Call.
Thom Shepherd has become a staple in the trop rock fan’s diet. The Saltwater Cowboy and 2016 Texas CMA Songwriter of the Year will be making his fourth appearance at Laid Back Attack, returning by popular demand! His memorable performance at LBA 2014 drew a standing ovation from a grateful audience. Thom has written five #1 singles including Craig Morgan’s “Redneck Yacht Club” and David Ball’s “Riding with Private Malone.” In total, Thom has written 15 radio singles and has had more than 100 of his songs recorded by such artists as George Jones, Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan. His music has taken him on 9 tours performing for our military in 17 different countries. His performance at LBA’s Last Call will be his second with his co-star bride Coley McCabe.
Melanie Howe “The Djembabe”
Melanie Howe “The Djembabe” is a well-known percussionist throughout the continent and offers more than most in her energetic and exciting performance. Her unique and innovative style of playing and performance has put her in high demand with musicians, though in recent years much of her touring has been in connection with her own duo/band Drop Dead Dangerous with partner vocalist Kitty Stteadman. Melanie has become an LBA fixture and a favorite with both audience and her fellow musicians because she makes everyone else better. She’s in such high demand to accompany other players that she’s been called the hardest working woman in trop rock.
Jimmy and the Parrots
For years, Jimmy and the Parrots have been playing to delighted crowds all over the United States and the Caribbean. They have been a featured act at the annual Meeting of the Minds in Key West for 15 years.. Their Key West performances also included well-known venues such as the the Smokin’ Tuna Saloon, Rick’s Café, Sloppy Joe’s, Pat Croce’s Rum Barrel, Schooner Wharf, and Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville. They were named Trop Rock Music Association Entertainer of the Year in 2012 and again in 2014. In addition to two CDs of original music, the band has produced albums of cover music, including the three disc set “Island Jam” that has sold more than 100,000 copies! The band makes their first LBA appearance, crossing the event off lead singer Jimmy Maraventano’s bucket list!
Stars on the Water
Stars on the Water are the West Coast’s premier Trop Rock party band. Led by fan favorite Jerry Gontang, they have been a fixture at Laid Back Attack since the event moved to Olympia. And this year, they take on the special high honor of playing the final Laid Back Attack Wrap Party, free to registered LBA attendees and open to the general public, on Sunday afternoon on the deck at Buzz’s Bar and Grill on Mud Bay, just a few miles from the Hotel RL, and within the hotel’s free shuttle service.
Drop Dead Dangerous
Drop Dead Dangerous is a musical force. Two women who met touring independently, teamed up and are ready to take on the world. Since their start in autumn of 2015, they have toured and performed in front of the continental United States and Caribbean islands. Vocalist and guitar player, Kitty Steadman, is arguably the most powerful female vocalist the southern rock and country-music landscape has heard. Melanie Howe, commonly known as “The Djembabe”, effortlessly fills the pocket with groove. Her wild drum kit and percussion rig leave audiences saying “how in the Hell can she do all of that?!” Blending with “sister-like” harmonies, Drop Dead Dangerous released their first album, “Drop Dead LIVE” including regular band mates JD Edge and Paul Wray. You can catch them in night clubs, festivals, beach bars, and honky tonks; traveling thousands of miles with their “ready to party” attitude.
A shy, mild-mannered Southern California lawyer became one of the trop rock genre’s best known singer-songwriters with his catalog of thoughtful, introspective ballads. Just kidding. Bob Karwin is trop rock’s loudest performer, shouting his way to the top of the heap and mocking his competition on his way to becoming the 2016 Trop Rock Entertainer of the Year. His latest album “Reinventing the Wheel” contains ten new Karwin originals, including the chart toppers “Bearable Hours” and “I’m With the Band.” Bob Karwin welcomes LBA attendees with a performance in the RL Hotel Bar during registration hours on Thursday afternoon July 12 in a Happy Hour sponsored by the Vancouver Island Parrot Head Club.
Multi-instrumentalist Bill Cockrell ahs performed as a drummer and guitarist as parts of bands and as a solo singer songwriter. In addition to his regular appearances at MOTM, he has performed at Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios and most of the Florida Margaritaville Restaurants. He has released two full length trop rock CDs, Dog’s Life, and Aquaholic. He’ll be performing solo in the Laid Back Late Nite lounge and as part of the Dock Rockers backing Donny Brewer on Saturday night.
Dan has long been part of the “Drunken Monkey’s” band!!! He currently resides part-time in Key West, Florida, which has helped to launch his career as a solo performer. He first performed some of his original music at Koz’s Green World Gallery Songwriters Fest during “Meeting of the Minds” a few years ago. Dan has been a familiar face at MOTM, and has performed numerous times at LBA. We are happy to have him back for our final year.
