History

History Lesson…

Laid Back Attack (LBA) is the annual summer charity musical festival staged by the Parrot Heads of Puget Sound (PHoPS).  Held in July of each year, LBA has become PHoPS’ single largest fundraising effort of the year, and features some of the finest Trop-Rock artists and bands from around the country.

LBA was the brainchild of PHoPS member Scott Solinski, who wanted to put together an event that would allow PHoPS the opportunity to bring great Trop-Rock artists to the Northwest while giving PHoPS members the opportunity to live up to our motto … “Party with a Purpose”.   Eric Stone, Mark Mulligan, Scotty Bryan and Dave Calhoun provided the live music for the first LBA which was held in 2003 at the Kingston Cove Yacht Club in Kingston, WA.  When the final numbers were added up … $1,100 had been raised for the local food banks and an annual tradition was born.

The Kingston Cove Yacht Club was the host and partner in presenting Laid Back Attack for eight years.  Each year a local charity or charities were selected to benefit from the proceeds of LBA.  During that time more than $18,000 was raised and donated to local charities.

In 2011, newly elected PHoPS board member Phil Pompeo, proposed taking LBA to the next level and stage a multi-day event that would draw Parrot Heads from other parts of the country to Seattle.  To accommodate the anticipated growth of a multi-day event, LBA was moved in 2011 to Bremerton, WA and staged over two-days at the South Pacific Bar & Grill.  A line-up that featured national Trop-Rock stars Bob Karwin, Mark Mulligan, Kelly McGuire, Scott Kirby & Dave Edmiston, and Jerry Gontang & “Stars on the Water” drew a capacity crowd and established LBA as a destination event for Parrot Heads everywhere.  LBA 2011 was also a financial success raising more than $8,000 for three local charities.

The success of LBA in 2011 forced the planning committee to seek an even larger venue in 2012.  The Silverdale Beach Hotel in Silverdale, WA was selected as the site for LBA X.  To help promote the event, PHoPS entered into a partnership with the Washington State Elks Association, establishing their charity “Tall Elks Therapy Program for Children” as the benefiting charity of LBA in 2011.  The partnership proved to be a great success with nearly $11,000 raised for the “Tall Elks” program from the proceeds of LBA X.

Continued growth of the event lead to the decision to move LBA to the Sea-Tac Airport Holiday Inn who hosted LBA ’13 and ’14 in their fabulous 5,000 square-foot Summit Ballroom on the 12th floor of the hotel.

In 2014, PHoPS entered into a partnership with the USO Northwest for the proceeds of the event to benefit service men and women and their families as they pass through our airport.

A re-branding of the Holiday Inn to the Crowne Plaza forced LBA to relocate again in 2015.  The Red Lion Hotel in Olympia, WA. was selected as the new home of LBA and a record attendance produced a record profit for the event, enabling PHoPS to present a check for more than $28,400 to the USO Northwest.

Laid Back Attack returned to the Red Lion Hotel in Olympia where a major remodeling project has produced a sparkling new venue re-branded the Red Lion as the “Hotel RL”.

We proudly continued our partnership with the USO Northwest and introduced Emmit’s Magic Animal Rescue for our benefiting charities for 2016 and 2017.

Over the years, Laid Back Attack has raised more than $150,000 !!!

2018 is the “Last Call” for the Laid Back Attack we all know and love as a national, destination, multi-day music event. It will retire at the close of the 2018 festivities.

Thank you, and hope that you will continue to support Parrot Heads and Trop-Rock.
